Where can I find the E23 5kv lamp for my Sagem Axium / Optoma / LG /Zenith?

Nov 14, 2008 in Manufacturer

Well…thankfully, we’ve got the answer :)

You can buy the E23 5Kv lamp here

Just a brief refresher for some who might not know why finding this lamp is such a big deal.

Typical Rear Projection TVs, often referred to by their particular technology name such as DLP, LCOS, Projection LCD, D-ILA, etc., etc. are almost always using a set voltage standard for lamp ignition (also known as striking).

This standard has always been 15,000 Volts, hence 15Kv. At the onset of UHP and RPTV technology sometime in the late 1990s and early 2000s, a few TV manufacturer’s decided to take a different direction to the norm…or at least the norm we’re accustomed to today. Manufacturer’s like Samsung, Hitachi, JVC, RCA, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Mitsubishi, Sharp, etc., etc., all decided to go with the industry standard of 15Kv ingition lamps. A few other manufacturer’s like Sagem Axium, Optoma, LG, and Zenith originally went with the 5Kv setup. Back in the day, before the advent of big screen LCDs and Plasma technology, it wasn’t unreasonable to spend $400-$500 when came time to replace your TV lamp. It was understood…for having the big screen experience of the theater in your home, it was going to cost you!

Well, that’s all fine and dandy…but then something else happened. The original manufacturer’s underestimated the market demand for UHP replacement lamps. There were only two factories in the world with the technology to produce these lamps. These factories were 6 months behind market demand!

Ok…six months and things get better right? Not really…the economics of these replacement lamps (the 5Kv that you can hardly find) didn’t make sense for the lamp manufacture (Philips) at a time when big retailers were putting orders of more than 500,000 pieces each! Naturally, if a manufacturer is sourcing a few thousand lamps for their aftermarket support versus another factory whose requesting a few million lamps for their new production models…guess who’s going to get preference there?!?

Looking back at the 5Kv versus 15Kv standard, those lesser known brands may have actually been visionaries all along. Today, the natural progression of UHP lamps is in front projectors…in schools and hospitals, in government buildings and corporations…there is a lot of demand! For most front projection applications today, original lamps run on the 5Kv ignition standard.

Syntax Olevia LCT50HV LAMP - Where can I find one?

Oct 07, 2008 in Manufacturer

The Olevia LCT50HV TV was produced by parent company Syntax Brillian (trading under BRLC). The company went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year after defaulting on numerous loans. Per SEC filings in February of 2008, Syntax owed creditors more than $130 million! Today, Syntax-Brillian’s brands: Olevia & Vivitar are owned by a new corporation Olevia International Group, LLC, which falls under the umbrella of TCV Group. In short, it’s all a big mess, and that’s why there are no replacement parts available for these TVs!

Our sponsor, Discount-Merchant.com has secured a significant amount of replacement parts for these Syntax Olevia LCOS Televisions, including replacement lamps (the consumable bulbs), light engines, DMD and printed circuit boards, power supplies, remotes, manuals, front screens…you name it.

We’ve had numerous people ask us: “Where can I get a replacement lamp from my Olevia TV?” Or, something like, “I’ve searched everywhere and I can’t find the lamp for my TV!”

Why is it so difficult to find the replacement lamp for these Syntax Olevia TVs?
For one, these use a special type of lamp not common among LCOS, DLP, or D-ILA TVs. The typical lamp TV lamp has an ignition voltage of 15,000-20,000 volts. The Olevia’s prefer a lamp that ignites at 5,000 volts, hence, the lamps are not compatible. Today, it is extremely difficult finding these replacement lamps or any other spare parts for that matter. Let us know which parts you’re looking for and we’ll get them to you!

Samsung HLS7178 - Weird Intermittent Startup Noise

Sep 27, 2008 in Samsung, Samsung Lamps

Hi everyone,

Here is a link to the video showing the intermittent noise problem I am experiencing with my Samsung HLS-7178 DLP.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1420583595645736954&hl=en

Descrition of problem:
The noise from the video is consistent (in duration and sound), and it happens every 6 or 7 times the set is powered up.  If it is one of those times it makes the noise at start-up, it also makes a quick “cough” at shut-down (one quick burst of the noise in the video).

Aside from this noise, the set works/functions perfectly as far as I can tell (even during the times it makes the noise on startup, everything seems fine once the noise stops).  It appears to me that the brightness level/output may be lower when the noise happens, but I cannot be 100% sure of that.  Best Buy had sent out a very poorly trained technician at one point who thought the noise may have been the color wheel, but he disconnected the color wheel and was still able to recreate the sound.  The only way to reliably recreate the sound is to go into the Service Menu and adjust the DB Gain setting - if I do that and jog the value up/down, eventually I hear this same noise.

I think an important thing to note is that there’s no middle-ground on this noise; it either completely makes the exact same noise on start-up, or it starts up/shuts down whisper-quiet.  There’s never just “a little bit” of the noise.

This behavior started after a tech had come to fix an “image flickering” issue in November 2007; at that time, she replaced the ballast and the Dynamic Black Assembly.  The flickering went away, but this intermittent noise began. I contacted Best Buy and got a replacement lamp sent out to me to see if that was the issue, but the noise still happens with the new lamp.

My gut says this is an issue with the Dynamic Black assembly, but I want to be sure it’s that if I get someone to come out and replace it again (I really want to avoid a whole LE replacement, as the set is calibrated).

Any thoughts?

Samsung HLP5063W shut down

Sep 27, 2008 in Samsung

I’ve got a Samsung HLP5063W in service since January 2005 with 10,600 hours on the original lamp (smaller square lamp). About a month ago it started shutting down about 1-2 times a week. It came right back up when turned back on. This week, it’s shutting off every 20-40 minutes. It comes back up instantly when re-powered. All through-out this, the picture has been crystal clear, so I wonder if it is really the lamp that needs to be replaced.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks, Bill.

There are some Samsung DLP-TV production series that use two different kind of color wheel in the optic system, one is a ball bearing based system and the other is an air suspension system.
While the two color wheels have the same diameter and look the same they are not compatible in any way, and cannot be swapped.
The only way around this is to change the complete housing and wheel from one type and replace it with the other complete assembly type.
To do this you must firs consider the following conditions.
1.- If you wish to use the BP900674A color wheel with its respective original housing in a TV that has an air suspension system you must insert a jumper on the pin connectors “CN810”.  This will let the TV’s bios know to change the timing of the color wheel.
2.- On the contrary, if you want to use the air suspension system with its respective original housing in a TV that has a ball bearing based system you must remove the jumper on the “CN810” pin connectors.
Remember:
A: Ball bearing based system Color Wheel:  Jumper inserted in the “CN810” pin connectors.
B: Air suspension system: Jumper removed on the “CN810” pin connectors.
Ball bearing based system Color Wheel, Part No. BP900674A, BP67-0099A, you can replace it with its original housing in case it’s broken or if it fails.
Here are the differences between both color wheels.

My picture is out I heard a “slight” grinding i think its the color wheel. Originally the picture went to a pink tone and then flickered and went out completely. shutdown and it did the same thing minus the pink tone. light fires up when i turn on the TV but shuts down in 5 seconds and i hear the slight grinding I removed the colorwheel and the bearing seems a bit rough. Any help please.
