What Causes This Sound?

Postby MoInStl » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:27 pm

I searched the thread and most posts are about a color wheel whine. My HL-S5068W sounds like a car with a bad battery trying to turn over. It's low pitched and has a dragging sound. More of a rrrrr-rrrr kind of noise when I turn it on and off. So it may just be a fan?

If I stand in front of the set, the noise comes from the back left side.

Thanks in advance!

The best thing you can do is remove the back cover and track the noise, so you can be sure where is the problem.

You can stop the fans with a finger and check if one of them is producing the noise.

Thanks for the reply. I have an extended warranty and a Samsung Field tech is coming to replace the color wheel this afternoon. It does not have a high pitched whine though. Do color wheels have any other noises?

The noise depends on the type of damage the color wheel has. It could be broken in pieces or maybe it just has problems to spin properly.

Whatever the problem was with the color wheel, a new one fixed it. The fans were fine although dusty.

Tech left me a full (small) bottle of Klear Screen. I love that stuff.
