television won't come on. without warnings, distortion or noise syptoms, failed to power up the other day. I unplugged the unit for a day, won't turn on.

Depending on the noise you're haring there. There are only a few things that can produce audible noises. Would you say the noise is mechanical or electric? Buzzing, clicking etc...
