I have a Samsung HLN617W with a bad lamp. The lamp code required is a BP96-00224E. The lamp has the following numbers on it.

Is the smaller Philips 132w replacement lamp with adaptor compatible and am I going to see a little brightness increase in the picture?

You need the 100W lamp. Both the big and small Philips lamps are good.
There is a 95% probability your problem is just the lamp, however there are another possible issues (I.E. a weak ballast) that can cause a low brightness.

The bulb is bad in the TV as the filament is shattered. What I was asking if I can update with the 132w lamp and adaptor is there any brightness difference between the 132w and the original 100w? Also will my set have to have an original 120w ballast to support the newer 132w lamp? I hope I am clear with my question and thanks for answering.

The wattage of the ballast needs to be in the range of wattage of the bulb, if you have a 120W ballast you can use a 120/132W bulb, but not if you have a 100W ballast.
If the ballast wattage is less than the bulb wattage the bulb is not going to turn on.
If the bulb wattage is less than the ballast wattage the bulb is going to pop.
