There's a distinct clicking noise, but the television will not turn on.

If you hear a clicking noise that sounds like the ballast trying to power on the lamp, but nothing happens, the lamp may be faulty.

Television owners can also describe this sound as the television "cycling on," but the lamp doesn't appear to fire. Sometimes the lamp will fire up and stay on for minutes, or hours a time, only to turn off again. If the ballast is able to ignite your lamp, but the lamp is only working intermittently, it may be time to replace that lamp. Keep in mind new lamps should not exhibit this symptoms! If you've recently purchased a new lamp and it's not "firing up," then there might be something else wrong with your television.

If there is no power or no clicking or cycling sound, the ballast will not click, so make sure the television is properly plugged in and attempt to turn on your television again.

Known issues for televisions with bad ballasts are Samsung, RCA, and Mitsubishi. Philips UHP lamps have a .03% failure rate. Each lamp is tested for ignition before they leave the factory. If you see lamp indicator lights, chances are the lamp is at fault, but if you're on this page, you may have a ballast issue that's keeping your lamp from igniting properly.
