There's a rapid clicking noise, and the lamp will not ignite.

A rapid clicking noise may mean your ballast is not firing the lamp properly and the ballast will need to be replaced. Replacing the ballast is a likely solution, but it's advised that if it's near time to replace your lamp, you should purchase a lamp and and make sure the ballast is the cause of the problem. The lamps and ballasts are about the same price, but the lamps are fairly inexpensive compared to a television service call, and useful in troubleshooting should you find the ballast to be problem. Philips UHP lamps have a very low defect rate (0.03%).

Known issues for televisions with bad ballasts are Samsung, RCA, and Mitsubishi. Philips UHP lamps have a 3 in 10,000 chance of failing. Each lamp is tested for ignition before they leave the factory.
