The Sony PFM-42B1 is a high definition monitor, which has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology. However, this monitor does not give the highest display resolution when compared with the most other monitors that use the plasma technology. The Sony KZ-42TS1 is a high definition television that has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology to deliver an excellent picture. The set is a complete package in terms of the features and functions and has plenty of differences than most of the run of the mill plasma sets. For starters, the Sony KZ-42TS1 has a native display resolution of 1024 by 1024. The cabinet is predominantly silver in color with the internal speakers fitted at the bottom of the screen. This positioning of the speakers has allowed the manufacturers to decrease the width of the set by quite a few inches. It is also equipped with a NTSC tuner and has a bezel width of 2 inches, which is not exactly synchronous with today’s trends of extremely thin bezels.

From the five preset modes offered by the set, the vivid mode offers excellent contrast and sharpness and is ideal for viewing during the day or in brightly lit rooms. The Sony KDL-46XBR4 is a high definition television, which uses the LCD technology and has a screen size of 46 inches when measured diagonally. The Bravia KDL-46XBR2 delivered excellent performance and was a real knockout set. With this backdrop, the specification sheets suggest that the Sony KDL-46XBR4 should be even better. For all you high definition TV things cannot get much better. The set is said to have a better black levels and a 120 Hz operation. The latter is a feature that helps to reduce the smear with moving images, which is one of the problems with the LCD technology.

The cabinet design is fantastic. The screen is surrounded with a dark gray bezel that is framed by a glass frame. Sony has gone a step further with the designing by providing bezels having different colors to match the décor of the room. Although this type of designing has its disadvantages as the set occupies more space than other sets of similar size. The set offers plenty of inputs although it lacks the CableCard slot. The controls are located at the side of the cabinet. However, you will rarely need to use them, as the remote is more than capable of doing everything.

The overall performance of the Sony KDL-46XBR4 is truly fantastic and even better than the Sony KDL-46XBR2. If you are willing to append a little more for it and have a slightly more unallocated space then you cannot go wrong with this set.

The JVC HD-56FH96 is a high definition television, which has a screen size of 56 inches when measured diagonally and uses JVC’s highly acclaimed D-ILA technology. The cabinet of the set has a very thin bezel and is fully black in color.

The JVC HD-56FH96 has a full display resolution of 1920 by 1080, which is also known as 1080p and is the highest native display resolution available today. Surprisingly though even if it can display 1080p, it does not accept the input signals at 1080p, which is a real disappointment. In this case, the input signals are upconverted to 1080p to be displayed with the full display resolution.

The colors produced by the set were outstanding in all the tests that were conducted. Although it was brilliant during a few of the tests, overall the set lacked consistency. Te picture was quite sharp but it was also very dark especially in the shadows and offered minimal details. The vertical viewing angles were also very narrow compared to most other sets. The remote is fully functional and has plenty of buttons to help the viewer get the best possible output. Thank fully all the buttons are backlit which makes the remote easy to use in the dark.

The set is priced at more than $3000. The fact that the set does not accept 1080p is too much of a void for it to fill and really does not offer much value for money.

The LG 42LP1D is a high definition television that uses the LCD technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. The prices of the LCD’s like the sets from most of the other technologies are dropping very quickly. Even though the LCD had a massive lead in the market over the plasmas the latter is catching up very quickly. The brightness of the set is fantastic and is perhaps one of the brightest LCD’s seen so far. This means that the set will be a pleasure to watch even in brightly lit rooms as it does a great job at minimizing any reflections.

The set is quite good with the black levels too and produces higher than average levels for an LCD. The vertical viewing angle is quite average for an LCD although the horizontal one should have been better. The cabinet houses the internal speakers at the sides of the screen. The set is primarily silver in color with a thin black colored frame around the screen. More than anything else, the best things about the set are the brightness and the high black levels. So if you like watching the television during the day or have a brightly lit room, the LG 42LP1D is the one to go for.

The LG 42PX4D is a high definition television which uses the plasma technology and has a screen size of 42 inches when measured diagonally. The cabinet is well designed and has plenty of style and elegance. It is predominantly silver in color and a shiny black frame is used to house the screen. The best thing about the LG 42PX4D is the black level which is as low as 0.027 ft-L which is very high for a plasma. The set offers one of the highest black levels for a plasma television till date even though it falls well short of what the CRT’s are capable of generating. The performance of the set would have been one to watch out for except for the colors. Even though the colors are not bad, they certainly are not accurate. Even though the plasma technology has been credited with image burn-in issues plenty of times now, enough has been done to control the situation. You are unlikely to suffer the impact unless you increase the contrast to a really high level.

This model is the successor for the Panasonic TH-42PX25 which delivered a stellar performance and also won most of the awards for the best flat panel display. The two have plenty in common although the Panasonic TH-42PX500U is more of a budget model with the massive decrease in prices. To call them similar is a stark understatement. It seems to be a case of old wine in a new bottle. Come to think of it the bottle is not all that new either as the dimensions and styling of the cabinet has more or less remained the same.

Unlike the previous models, the Panasonic TH-42PX500U accepts 720p signals through both the component as well as DVI inputs. The black levels offered by the set are simply fantastic. The set has been provided with plenty of functions including the CableCard slot which enables the user to view Cable TV without having to go for additional set top boxes. The remote does most of the things that it is supposed to and is backlit. However the direct input access is missing.

The noise reduction feature seemed to make the images a lot softer. Panasonic has provided the set with plenty of inputs to hookup all your external devices to and all of them are located on the backside of the cabinet.

Overall, the set offers fantastic performance although the black levels could have been better. The detail levels displayed by the set are commendable even though the contrast levels are average. The strong performance for a relatively moderate price makes the set an attractive option and is certainly worth a look.

In case of inputs having resolutions different from the native resolution, the images are scaled to fit the available pixel area. Even though the performance of the Samsung HP-T4264 was not bad, it was such that left plenty of scope for improvement. The ease of use, more than reasonable price, great specifications and plenty of features however, are more than capable of putting this set onto your shopping lists.

While most of the inputs re located at the back, some of them have also been provided at the side for easy access. The set also boasts of an HDMI connector and even a USB slot. The USB slot enables the user to view photos or videos or listen to audio files directly from the USB device. The remote is quite handy with a few of the buttons being backlit.

The Samsung HL-S5087W is high definition television, which uses the DLP technology has a screen size of 50 inches when measured diagonally. The price of the set makes it a luxury purchase for most of the buyers. However, its performance may well convince you spend that little bit more. The cabinet is very sleek and eye-catching. It has a very thin bezel, is fully black with a glossy finish except for the silver strip at the bottom of the screen (above the power button) which is used to hide the controls.

The full display resolution offered by the set is 1920 by 1080, which is the highest available today. The colors offered by the set were excellent, rich and yet very natural. The detail levels given by the set were exceptional with all the details clearly visible even in the background. Even the detail levels in the darker scenes were more than impressive and left us more than impressed. Even standard definition telecasts made quite an impact on the set. The Samsung HL-S5087W did not score an average in any of the tests but was more than good in all of them.

The audio quality is good although it fails to match the excellent video quality. However, the provision of the audio out connection can be used to good effect with just a little bit of knowledge. Overall, the Samsung HL-S5087W is the set to go for if you can swallow the price.
