Mitsubishi Model WD-73833

Postby PapaIndiaMikePapa » Thu Jan 16, 2014 10:17 pm

I picked up a Mitsubishi Model WD-73833 off of Craigslist the other day. 73" beast in good physical condition, however it won't turn on.

The original owner told me it started with a few white dots, that multiplied, and multiplied. Eventually one day, the television would not turn on at all.

When I got the TV home, I plugged it in to troubleshoot the problem. It sounded like the TV powered on, but no picture.

I spent a little time researching the problem but am stuck on where I should start. I've read that it could be anything from the Optical Light Engine, to the DLP chip, the lamp itself, or a combination of the above.

Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated. Also keep in mind that I am trying to resell this TV, and want to keep costs to a minimum.

With the NFL playoffs here and the Superbowl (Go Patriots!) only a few weeks away, I would love to get this project done fast!

HELP!

Papa Mike,

Thank you for the great description of your issue and previous issues on the your Mitsubishi WD73833 Television set. I think the first place to start would be to test the voltage input to the ballast coming from the power supply. You can do this by using a multimeter on the 2 prong input located to the far left side of the ballast. You should be getting a 320V-380V power coming to the ballast when the power button is pressed on your mitsubishi tv.

Can you confirm that the lamp part number printed on the Mitsubishi lamp cartridge is 915P061010? You should also notice that it is an OSRAM 150W/180W 1.0 P-VIP or Philips UHP 150/180W 1.0 lamp. The previous owner of the television may have purchased the wrong lamp and put it in the housing - causing it not to fire. In this case, I highly recommend a PHILIPS brand bulb from an authorized Philips distributor for your WD-73833 television. Part number 915P061010 can be found here:

http://www.discount-merchant.com/p-36-mitsubishi-915p061010-lamp-replacement-915p061a10.aspx

Again, I highly recommend the Philips brand to prevent intermittent issues and trouble during our next step in diagnosing the problem.

From a technical point of view, the no power issue and the white dot issue are independent of each other. The white dot issue on the Mitsubishi WD-73833 is clearly outlined here:

http://www.fixyourdlp.com/2012/09/17/how-to-replace-4719-001997-dlp-chip-in-the-mitsubishi-wd-73833-rptv/

You may need to replace the DLP Chip on your DMD Board as stated above... The part number for that is the 4719001997 which is also know as:

4719-001997

4719-001997

4719-001985

4719-001999

1910-6103W

1910-6143W

1910-6145W

W1272-5003

Again, I recommend a reliable source... I have orders some from Jimmy or TVParts stores and have received used ones that may have thousands of hours of use and have been pulled from working TV's... Again, this chip will have a lifetime and then start to fail just like your lamp. I recommend buying from a reputable dealer. Mitsubishi has them for about $299 each or you can buy them much cheaper at D-M:

Let us know what the part number of your lamp is and how it goes with the diagnosis!

WOW, thank you for the quick response.

I watched a few YouTube videos on how to test the voltage. This one probably has the best step by step instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TELvc0thP34

The TV is getting 340V, so I think we can rule that out as the problem.

I took the lamp cartridge out and there is a white sticker on the housing. It contains the Mitsubishi model number 915P061010, along with other manufacturer/hazard information.

When I pulled the bulb out, it had no markings besides a cellophane sticker with "100/300W BULB". Is there a way for me to tell if this bulb is compatible and if its still in working condition? The filament looks okay.

My game plan right now, is to purchase both the DMD DLP Chip and a new lamp from www.Discount-Merchant.com. If I purchase them together I can get 10% off using coupon code 'BIGBUY' and Free Shipping. I will replace the lamp first, and if need be replace the DLP Chip. (if not, they have a 30 day return policy)

PapaMike,

I'm glad you found a coupon code that can get you a discount on buying both parts. Based on the information on the light bulb being 100W/300W - I can assure you that the light bulb is a generic replacement lamp. Mitsubishi, Philips, or Discount-Merchant would never sell a lamp with such big variance... furthermore; this type of replacement lamp will most likely give you 70% of the optimal brightness at best. You can connect a 300W light-bulb to a 180W ballast, and all you will get is a small portion of the brightness... and the maximum brightness of the lamp being generic is already below the Philips or Osram standard.

I wonder where the previous owner bought the lamp from? I'm also assuming that the high-wattage lamp may have damaged or weekend your ballast. You should be really careful with what you put inside your gigantic Mitsubishi WD-73833 Television set! You don't want a big dim picture. You also don't want to damage a perfectly good TV to a point where repairs get expensive!

I also think that the 4719-001997 DLP Chip for your DMD Board should fix the infamous white dot issue and put your WD73833 TV back into new pristine condition. Just make sure you order the right part and inspect it before breaking the seal... The numbers on it should be either 19106103W or 19106143W.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Hey guys,

Just wanted to update you on my Mitsubishi 73833, and thank you for the guidance.

I picked up the lamp with housing (http://www.discount-merchant.com/p-36-mitsubishi-915p061010-lamp-replacement-915p061a10.aspx) and the dmd chip (http://www.discount-merchant.com/p-146847-mitsubishi-samsung-toshiba-4719-001997-dmd-dlp-chip.aspx) off Discount Merchant and had it in my hands in 2 days. I didn't think the USPS worked that fast!

I started off by changing the lamp. I plugged the TV back in, to re-diagnose what problems it still had. Much like the previous owner explained, it had the white dot syndrome. White dots everywhere, made me think it was snowing outside.

I had never changed a DMD DLP chip, so I started by watching this video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyAykjZ3zs4 alongside the guide provided by this website. http://www.fixyourdlp.com/2012/09/17/how-to-replace-4719-001997-dlp-chip-in-the-mitsubishi-wd-73833-rptv/

After a few minutes, I was ready to give it a try. The Chip model #1910-6143W matched the information on this site, so I went for it. I removed the optical light engine, and changed the DMDchip with no problems. Put everything back in its place, and even had a few screws left over! Turned the TV back on, and the white dot issue was gone.

Moral of the story: Got the TV working in time to watch the Seahawks run a clinic :(
