I am starting to have a problem develop with my Samsung Tv HLR5667WX. The picture shows sporadic digital color noise. This color noise comes and goes. It lasts for a short period of time, 2-4 minutes. The picture is good, except when this color noise begins. I have replaced the lamp twice. The present lamp has aprox. 800 hrs of use. There is no abnormal audio sounds coming from the Tv set. I have not added or removed any components ie, dvd player, stereo receiver, from my system. At present, this is a minor annoyance. However, this is a early symptom of a part failure. I have enclosed three photos. I would like to know which Tv component is failing so I can eventually fix it.

Thanks, Jeff

Hello,
This looks like it can be a colorwheel issue, are you getting the same distortion on all inputs? if so, when it happens does it affect the on screen menu? (TV internal menu not Dish, Cable, etc)....

As I said in my original post, this is a very sporadic problem. I do get the same distortion on all imputs. As for the internal Tv menu, I will have to check when the distortion reoccurs.

hmm... ok so does it happen mostly once the tv is warm? that is, once never right after ignition?

It has only happened after the Tv has warmed up. After the distortion occurs, it could be hours before it re-occurs.

The distortion just re-occured. The Tv internal menu showed a on off red color.

Does anybody on this forum have any suggestions as to what is causing my problem? Any help would be appreciated. I live 150 miles from any major city where I could get this Tv looked at.

Hello again, if the distortion was as it seems in the picture to only affect the integrated TV menu, I have to speculate this can be the DMD board or maybe even just the digital video board if this was on an analog input..

When the distortion occurs, the Tv picture shows isolated areas of the red color noise, the direct tv menu gets the horizonital pink wavy distortion, and the Tv internal menu become red, off and on. All the imputs are either component or hdmi digital imputs.

Hello Jeff,
this could be one of three, colorwheel, Digital video board, or at the worst the DMDboard/light engine, you can start by opening up and dusting the inside of the TV, and taking a visual inspection of the colorwheel, make sure it is spinning freely.

This most likely is something related with:

a) Digital Video Board
b) DMD Board

If this happens with the HDMI input, this will tell you that issue is with the DMD (since HDMI bypass digital video board and goes straight to DMD) and you will need to replace it.

I went ahead and opened the back of the Tv. Did a complete cleaning of the dust, checked the colorwheel, and all the connections. The colorwheel looked normal, however, the Tv was very dirty, six years of accumulated dirt. With 5 HRs of use, the color noise distortion has not returned. Hopefully, my color noise problem was a dust related problem.

Thanks for the help,
Jeff

The red noise problem never completely disapeared. It comes and goes everytime I use the tv. It seems to begin within an hour after the tv is turned on. The red noise continues for about an hour and then stops. The longer the tv is on, the problem seems to be less. After about 3 hrs, the problem will not return for 3-4 hrs. A tv repairman from another web site told me the problem is either the color wheel or the DMD board. Can the color wheel become defective without any audible sound? Has anyone experienced this on this forum? I have found 2 other posts with this problem, however there were no responses to these posts.

The tv has not developed any abnormal sound. The problem is digital red noise.

noise*** sorry, I am pretty sure a DV board and colorwheel will fix this and keep your tv working like new for another couple yrs. I just fixed an RCA with the same problem I replaced both (because lets face it, I rather tackle most probable scenarios and I charge by the hour!) And it was like new.

I decided to try replacing the color wheel first. The old color wheel had a few scratches and the blue wire had a very small crack in the insulation. After installing the new color wheel, the picture is great. The red colo noise is gone. I have had the tv on for two days with getting any red color noise. Thanks for all the help.
